Heartbeat - Adult Supervision
4-7 years old
Did you know:
Over 170 years ago, a man named Rene Laennec invented the first stethoscope.
To find out more information see www.wikipedia.org/wiki/René_Laennec
Materials:
1 cardboard tube from a paper towel roll
Procedure:
1) Have the child place the paper tube over a volunteers heart.
2) Have them count the number of beats for 30 seconds. Add this number together twice to find out how many times each minute the person’s heart beats.
3) Now have the volunteer run in one place for one minute, then have them listen again. Write down what you hear and calculate the new beats per minute.
Follow-Up Discussion:
The heart beats faster after the exercise in order to pump more blood (oxygen) to the working muscles.
For more information regarding the “Heart” you can “google” heart on the internet or visit the local library
Invisible Ink with Lemon Juice (Adult supervision)
8 - 12 year olds
What you’ll need:
• Half a lemon or Orange
• Water
• Spoon
• Bowl
• Q-tip
• White paper
• Light bulb lamp
Instructions:
1. Squeeze some lemon juice into the bowl and add a few drops of water.
2. Mix the water and lemon juice with the spoon.
3. Dip the q-tip into the mixture and write a message onto the white paper.
4. Wait for the juice to dry so it becomes completely invisible.
5. When you are ready to read your secret message or show it to someone else, hold the paper up to the light on the lamp.
What’s happening?
Lemon juice is an organic substance that oxidizes and turns brown when heated. Diluting the lemon juice in water makes it very hard to notice when you apply it the paper, no one will be aware of its presence until it is heated and the secret message is revealed. Other substances which work in the same way include orange juice, honey, milk, onion juice, vinegar.
